Billy Leen has been creating unique stonework, handcrafted headstones, memorials and sculpture since 1988. Based in Ballymacelligott, near Tralee, County Kerry, Billy has spent decades developing his craft and creating meaningful pieces for families, communities and public spaces throughout Kerry and beyond.

Billy’s work is inspired by his love of people, family, nature and traditional craftsmanship. Every piece is approached individually, combining traditional hand-carving techniques with creativity and a genuine understanding of the people and stories behind each commission.

Billy enjoys meeting people and believes strongly in an open-door policy. Visitors are always welcome at the Artistic Memorials workshop, where the surrounding stonework, sculpture and art reflect a lifetime dedicated to the craft — and where there is always time to sit down, have a cup of tea and discuss your ideas.

Artistic Memorials & Sculptures is a family-run business based in Ballymacelligott, near Tralee, County Kerry. For us, creating a memorial is a family craft, combining traditional stonework, artistic design and care for every detail. At the heart of Artistic Memorials is Billy Leen, who has worked with stone since 1988. With decades of experience in traditional hand carving, Billy creates unique, handcrafted headstones, memorials, sculptures and stonework. Every piece is individually designed and made, rather than simply picked from a catalogue.
Billy’s daughter, Mary, plays a very important role in the work we do. She has a natural eye for art and design and is heavily involved in the drawing and design of our memorials, artwork and preparation of stencils. Mary works closely with Billy to turn a family’s ideas into something personal that can then be carefully brought to life in stone. Her creativity can be seen throughout much of our work.

Billy’s grandson, Cody, is the third generation of the family involved in Artistic Memorials. He works alongside Billy with the day-to-day work, including preparing and polishing stone, fitting and erecting headstones and memorials, and helping with the work involved from the workshop through to the finished memorial. Today, three generations of the Leen family work together at Artistic Memorials, with Billy’s lifetime of experience in stone, Mary’s eye for drawing and design, and Cody learning the craft while helping with the practical side of the work.We believe a memorial should be much more than a piece of stone. It should reflect the life, personality and memory of the person it represents. We take the time to listen to each family, hear their ideas and create something personal that will stand as a lasting tribute for generations. Alongside our handcrafted headstones and memorials, we create stone sculptures, incorporate handcrafted stained glass into our stonework, carry out restoration and cleaning, and undertake public stonework, including major projects for Kerry County Council.From our workshop in Ballymacelligott, we are proud to continue a family tradition of craftsmanship, creating headstones, memorials and stonework for families throughout Tralee, Killarney, Dingle and County Kerry, as well as further afield.

Looking to our ancient past, our ancestors the Celts believed in creating a permanent memorial of the life of a person. They saw immense importance in being remembered well in death with a beautiful stone that was lovingly crafted to stand the test of time. They erected 'markers in time' that gives a form of eternity to the name of their loved ones. These memorials were something very special, something spiritual. A permanent mark of respect for our departed loved ones.
